The Kelty Story

It Started in a Garage (and a Kitchen)

In 1952, Dick Kelty turned his passion for the outdoors into something big—backpacks that made it easier to get out and PLAY. Inspired by his love for hiking the Sierras, Dick crafted lightweight, trail-tested packs in his garage, while his wife, Nena, sewed them up in the kitchen. That first year? 29 packs, $678.85, and one wild idea that would change outdoor adventure forever.

-Russell Rowell, EVP Kelty Product and Industrial Design

“Dick Kelty is widely credited with making backpacking more accessible to the general public.”

-Dick Kelty

“I realized I was too much of an
outdoorsman to ever to be happy
working inside again.”

A FEW FUN FACTS

Backpack Bling: In 1963, Kelty gear summited Everest (thanks to a last-minute swap at Base Camp).

Bright Ideas: Our early packs were dyed in a washing machine—green underwear for the whole family included.

Built for Fun: From "tent snakes" to sneaking extra beer into your buddy’s pack, Dick Kelty’s mischievous spirit lives on.
